Show Statement: Alias Gallery presents "Whimsy and Wonderment" a solo exhibition by Nick Zaremba. This collection of paintings, drawings, pottery, and wood sculptures invites you into a world where imagination reigns, and the ordinary becomes extraordinary.  

Zaremba’s work is a vibrant exploration of whimsy and wonderment. His intuitive process embraces spontaneity and happy accidents, resulting in pieces that are both playful and profound. Pink Slime Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania proudly presents a two man art show by artist/brothers Matthew and Nick Zaremba entitled, “It Takes One To Know One”

On view in the gallery will be the artists works consisting of color and black and white framed prints of illustrations concerning the artists observations on everyday social activities, mental health references, and autobiographical introspections.  Available also will be limited editions smaller prints, one off magnets, as well as a short run of t shirts to commerce the show.  This showing will be one of many the brothers have organically and intuitively collaborated on together over the past decade and offers a subliminal and sometimes overt dialogue between each others work and creative process.

Artist Statement:

The Paperweight That Keeps My World From Blowing Away is the title of my latest collection of artworks from 2016 - 2017 arranged and installed in tight clusters on the walls of Thomas Young Gallery.

The title refers directly to what I think the process of making work is to me as a whole. Amongst things coming and going, cycles cycling, and people and situations in constant flux and change, sneaking away and making time to paint, collage, draw, and collect has always been my “paperweight” while living life.

When I think of my work nowadays and what it’s about, the only way I can form my description is in broken phrases and singular words.
With that being said, the following pertain to my work;

"Welcome to the exhibit, "A real person standing in a cartoon room", which is a phrase that runs through my head all the time and is autobiographical to me.  The proof of this is evidenced here in the form of a large series of artworks I've created on canvas squares but are comprised of everyday scraps of papers and textures mixed with my drawings and paint applications which reflect everyday chance and the world around me.”

Comprised of 49 drawings, this book was conceived as acontinuation of the artistic collaboration between Kai Althoff and artist Nick Z, which was first established in their 2007 joint exhibition at Gladstone Gallery, “We Are Better Friends For It.”Entitled, Dream Cereal, this book further explores the underlying themes of their exhibition and collaboration, borrowing from moments of history, religious iconography, and counter-cultural movements to create evocative contexts that are propped upon narratives simultaneously arcane yet familiar, at once deeply personal yet universal. Each work was made together by Althoff and Nick Z.

O·H+T Gallery is pleased to present Today's Pig is Tomorrow's Bacon, an installation of paintings, drawings, video, and sculpture by Nick Z.

From Me to You, Nick Z's 2006 installation in O·H+T's third floor project space, was characterized by odd, friendly characters, atmospheric backgrounds, small sculpture on shelves, and enigmatic bits of text. Since his move to New York two years ago, Nick Z's work has shown a building sense of confidence and daring. Often collaborating with other artists, he now works in broader strokes to address subjects such as defiance, wonder, hope, wants, needs, paranoia, physicality, and love. The most recent and most ambitious of these projects was his collaboration with German artist Kai Althoff, We Are Better Friends For It, at Barbara Gladstone Gallery in May, 2007. This large scale installation was described by Bridget L. Goodbody of the New York Times as "a cross between a shantytown and an after-hours club" and "a series of Merzbau sitting rooms."

It is impossible to separate Nick Z's work from his personal domain. Bouncing between the psychology of his inner world and an odyssey of real world experiences, he channels random phrases, spray-painted images, cartoonish faces, and abstract symbols to create intuitively structured environments which might feature paintings hung on the wall salon style or grouped together on the floor, sculpture fabricated from found objects, videos playing on monitors, and random wall art. Nick Z's work focuses so strongly on personal experience and stream of consciousness monologue that it would appear self indulgent, if he weren't such an engaging and sincere character. Like the journal of a scarred hero, his work tells of love, loss, bad times and good. Nick Z wears his heart on his sleeve ... but what better way to celebrate Valentines Day?

Nick Z is a Boston artist who has relocated to Brooklyn. He received a BA degree from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He is best known in Boston as a graffiti artist, and has exhibited his work nationally including the 2005 Drawing Show at the Boston Center for the Arts and the above mentioned show at Barbara Gladstone Gallery, which was recognized in Artforum as #3 on Jack Bankowsky's list of the 10 best shows of 2007. This is Nick Z's first one-person show at O·H+T.

Trashformations East features several artists who have become well known for their re-use of refuse. Stephen Whittlesey, John Marcoux and Mitch Ryerson all are nationally respected for their unique furniture incorporating castoffs. Leo Sewel -- one of the Philadelphia Dumpster Divers, along with fellow exhibitor Neil Benson -- contributes one of his life-size human figures made of junk. Donna Rhae Marder demonstrates yet another take on recycling with her "English/Irish Teapot" made of teabag wrappers. Even Josh Simpson, one of New England's most distinguished artists in glass, surprises us to discover that he uses reclaimed glass in his elegant "Blue New Mexico Mega Vase." all of the artists in Trashformations East have successfully mined the detritus of our "throw away" society and given new life to once used resources.

Trashformations East will be on exhibit January 15 ­ May 1, 2005 at Fuller Craft Museum and will then travel to other New England museums through 2008. The exhibition is curated by Lloyd Herman, founding Director of the Smithsonian Institution's Renwick Gallery

Overview: 

Eddie Martinez commissioned thirty-eight fine artists, commercial designers, and graffiti artists to make their own versions of Russian nesting dolls. The structure of these dolls—something that opens to reveal a smaller version of itself—was used as the conceptual point of departure for the show, which explored variations within a collective.
